What is ANSI? And what is all this fuss about Class 2 vs Class 3 safety clothing? - Part 1

I wanted to talk a little bit about ANSI and regulations. Wait, hold on .... don't go. We all know government regulations can be intrusive at times and boring most of the time but they can be important in protecting our work families and making sure they get home safe. So I wanted to do a couple posts about worker safety and the role that ANSI plays in it. And, if you don't like reading, I'll put videos and pictures. =)

So when was ANSI started?

ANSI (or American National Standard Institute) was originally formed in 1918, when five engineering societies and three government agencies founded the American Engineering Standards Committee (AESC). In 1928, the AESC became the American Standards Association (ASA). In 1966, the ASA was reorganized and became the United States of America Standards Institute (USASI). The present name was adopted in 1969.

Ok, I know who they are. Now what do they do?

 ANSI coordinates United States standards with international standards so that American products can be used worldwide. For example, standards ensure that people who buy a certified Class 2 or 3 safety vest from anywhere can make sure it is compliant and protects their workers. This helps to drive down costs simply due to the fact that everyone is playing with the same playbook. It also makes things simpler and in business, simpler is good.

Why should I care about safety regulations?

  Well, first, I believe that most owners care about their employees. If not, they probably shouldn't be business. But lets look at all the reasons of why putting an emphasis on safety saves you money and makes you a stronger company.

1.) Every injury costs your company a HUGE amount of money. Recently studies suggest that an average hand injury to a worker costs their company $28,000. Wow, that's a lot of gloves.

2.) The reputation of your business. With increased communication via Youtube, Facebook, Instagram, etc. people know what happens almost real time. Do you want to be the company that gets a Youtube video of one of your workers and half their hand severed or blinded in one eye? Trust me, social media will not be kind to you in that case.

3.) Insurance rates and regulations. Its obvious that insurance is calculated on risk, since it is a risk-transfer product. The better you do at preventing injuries and protecting your workers, the lower your insurance rates will be over time.

4.) Avoid getting in trouble with governmental agencies like OSHA. Business needs to keep moving and producing, you don't want to be shut down, not even for a day.

5.) Again, as I mentioned, you work with your employees every day. No one wants to see someone injured. Lets get them protected.

6.) Better and more productive employees. Employees that fear getting hurt don't work very hard. Keep them safe and see productivity rise.

7.) Better and more frequent applications for interviews. People want to work at a job that cares about them, pays well, offers good benefits, and PROTECTS THEM.
